The Kwikset Halo has long been one of our favorite smart locks, and this all-new version—the Halo Select—looks to be a significant upgrade. In addition to a more attractive industrial design compared to its brutalist predecessor, the Select will feature Matter over Thread connectivity in addition to Wi-Fi.
If you decide to connect via Wi-Fi, you won’t need a smart home hub. But if you opt to use Matter over Thread with a compatible smart home hub such as a SmartThings Station or an Apple TV 4K, you should be able to expect much longer battery life.
Speaking of batteries, the Halo Select will run on either 4 AA batteries, or if you hate the idea of disposable batteries, you’ll be able to buy a lithium-ion battery pack that you can recharge when needed.
This news is part of TechHive’s in-depth coverage of the best smart locks.
Kwikset says the Halo Select is “third-party tested to meet the highest BHMA Grade AAA standards and UL 20-minute fire rating for added peace of mind.” (Don’t miss our guide to the ANSI and BHMA standards that govern entry locks.) The company says it has also developed a new and quieter motor that operates the lock.
The Halo Select features a numeric touchscreen keypad as well as a physical key cylinder, or you can use Kwikset’s app to operate the lock. Homeowners will be able to share access with family and trusted guests by creating unique codes or via the Kwikset app. A geofencing feature can automatically unlock the Halo Select as you approach your home. And the lock administrator will receive real-time notifications whenever the lock is operated.

The all-new Kwikset Halo Select has a numeric touchscreen keypad and can be connected to a smart home system over Wi-Fi or Matter over Thread.

The lock comes with a door status sensor that will keep the homeowner informed as to whether the door is closed or has been left ajar. The lock will also send notifications when invalid codes are entered at the keypad or if the lock is tampered with.
“Halo Select represents the next step towards Kwikset’s mission to provide homeowners with unmatched security and seamless control over their home security,” said Kwikset director of marketing for electronics Jeff Sandoval. “By offering both Wi-Fi and Matter connectivity, Halo Select fills a critical gap in the market, providing a versatile, integrated solution that simplifies smart home integration.
